vBulletin Addons

vBulletin dürfte das bekannteste und am häufigst eingesetzte Forensystem weltweit sein. Auch mein Mountainbike-Forum, das Mountainbike Downhill Board,  läuft seit 2004 mit der vBulletin-Software.

Ich habe bei meinem Forum einige Modifikationen vorgenommen, damit die Software meinen Ansprüchen besser gerecht wird. Allerdings sind die meisten nur schnelle Hacks und keine einfach installierbaren Addons. Ein paar habe ich allerdings doch als vBulletin Addon realisiert. Diese werde ich hier vorstellen.

Addon – Produkt – Plugin

vBulletin unterscheidet im Admin-Interface zwischen Produkt und Plugin. Ein Plugin ist ein Programmcode, der an einer Stelle im vBulletin-Code hinzugefügt wird. Das Einfügen von solchem Code erfolgt mittels “Hooks”. vBulletin prüft bei der Ausführung an einer bestimmten Stelle (dem Hook),  ob dafür externer Code verfügbar ist, der ausgeführt werden soll. Wenn ja, führt es diesen aus. Damit kann man direkt – ohne den vBulletin-Quellcode ändern zu müssen – Funktionalität hinzufügen oder ändern. Allerdings hat dieses System natürlich auch seine Grenzen. Es sind nicht überall Hooks vorhanden, wo man sie für eine bestimmte Funktionalität benötigen würde.

Ein Produkt ist im vBulletin-Jargon eine Erweiterung für vBulletin mit einem bestimmten Zweck, die meist aus mehreren Plugins besteht. Für ein Produkt können auch Administrations-Einstellungen, Phrasen (Übersetzung), Versions-Abhängigkeiten und mehr definiert werden.

Add-Ons werden sowohl Produkte als auch Plugins, aber auch andere Erweiterungen und Änderungen genannt.

Styles und Templates

Neben Add-Ons gibt es noch Style- und Template-Modifikationen. Ein Style definiert das Aussehen von vBulletin. Für einen Style können eigene CSS-Einstellungen, eigene Grafiken (Buttons, Icons, etc.) und eigene Templates definiert werden. Templates sind HTML-Vorlagen für die einzelnen vBulletin-Webseiten oder Teile von Webseiten.
